Morphy Paul Morphy by Geza Maroczy Caissa 2012
Translated by Robert Sherwood from the 1909 edition published in Germany. Maroczy was the strongest player who ever annotated all of Morphy games and thus to non-German language readers, it should be of special interest, especially since the standards for analytical notes were far higher even in 1909 than were accepted when these games were played. There are all of Morphy’s then-known games analysed, though a few are game fragments when the full game was not known. Limited edition of only 600 copies, and is probably already out of print. Wildhagen Weltgeschichte des Schachs (The World History of Chess)
In the pre-computer age, Dr. E. Wildhagen of Hamburg drew up plans to compile and publish a series of books of games by all the chess greats, and from many countries. He had a master plan of 40 projected titles, appearing at a rate of c. one every 6 weeks, though they did not appear in numerical sequence. E.g. the 1st to appear was No. 11 (Lasker), 2nd was No. 18 (Euwe part 1) and 3rd was No. 23 (Botvinnik part 1). The principle was that all games would have a diagram after very 5th move by Black, so that the game could be followed without reference to a physical chessboard. They were all published with red cloth boards and contain between 350 and 550 games, together with a smaller separate appendix (sometimes lost). Usually with players’ full tournament record, opening index, algebraic notation etc. German forewords. Although, on his death, the series came to an end before completion, they have proved very collectible.
